What are service units?

We use “service units” to measure the use of our tools. They’re like our own, in-house currency. Every user, even if anonymous, has a “balance” of service units and spends them on whatever tools they wish—everything is à la carte.

Currently all tools cost 1 service unit per request.

Using Hexillion tools without an account

The tools at CentralOps.net and Hexillion are free for daily, interactive use—no login required. Simply pick a tool and use it.

As an anonymous user, you get 50 free service units every 24 hours. Whenever you use one of the tools, its cost in service units is deducted from your balance. If your balance runs out, you will get more free units at the end of the 24-hour period.

To extend or automate your use of these tools, however, you will need an account.

Anonymous usage has some other limits:

• You can’t use more than 50 units per day. There’s no way to add more, and they don’t accumulate from day to day.

• If you share an IP address or IP address range with other users, they are using the same free units as you. Your balance will run out faster.

• Automated queries or questionable activity from your IP address may cause the free units to run out faster or delay your getting more units. This is part of our anti-abuse system (much like an anti-spam system) to defend our site from abusers.

About Hexillion accounts

A paid account removes the limitations of anonymous use and offers new benefits.

• You can automate use of the tools and issue requests at high volume.

• You will have a private service unit balance to which you can add units at any time.

• You can use your service units at your own pace. They never expire, and there are no monthly charges.

Accounts have some other features that you may find useful:

• IP address recognition. If you have a static IP address or range of addresses, we can automatically log you in when you visit from those addresses. This is optional, of course, and you will always be able to log in with username and password from other IP addresses.

• Multiple users for the same account. Hexillion accounts are a bit like bank accounts—they have a single balance that multiple users can be authorized to access. If you have several employees or offices using Hexillion tools but would like to keep account management centralized (by your accounts payable department, for example), we can set up multiple usernames, each with their own passwords, that all draw from a single account.

• Usage statistics. The account information page shows you several useful bits of information about your account, including the date you last refilled it, your current balance, the rate at which you’ve being using service units, and an estimation of when you’ll run out of units.

• Balance warning email. Our system will automatically email you a notification when it estimates that you’re within 7 days of running out of service units. It will send another if you’re within 1 day of depletion. These notifications give you a chance to refill your account before running out of units.
